🍊The Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill in Rome was founded in 1932. It was designed by the architect Raffaele de Vico. The official name is Savello Park (after the famous family). Since the 16th century, their family fortress has been located in this area. It is noteworthy that a representative of this family named Giacomo later became Pope Honorius IV.
🍊The Orange Garden is an excellent observation platform from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Eternal City. In order to avoid vandalism, it was decided to plant bitter orange trees, so it is impossible to eat them, but to get aesthetic pleasure is quite likely.
🍊The first tree was planted in 1216 by monks from the nearby Santa Sabina Basilica. The park’s main avenue is named after the famous Italian actor and film director Nino Manfredi. At its end, you can admire the beautiful panorama of the Tiber River and see the majestic St. Peter’s Cathedral. In the central part is Piazza Fiorenzo Fiorentini, also an outstanding actor and scriptwriter.
🍊From above, the symmetrical garden layout is reminiscent of the giant Greek letter F. The main gate, designed as an ancient portal, is located on the side of Pietro d’Illyria Square. The garden is particularly beautiful in winter, when ripe oranges hang from the trees despite the cold season.
