💫The Basilica of St. Augustine in #rome , built in 1483, is the first church created in the Renaissance period. The famous architect Sebastiano Fiorentino worked on its construction. It is located in the Field of Mars. The patron saint of the basilica is Saint Augustine of Hippo, father of the Roman Catholic Church.
💫This is where the relics of his mother Monica are kept. In old times, you could meet here women from the world’s oldest profession among the church parishioners. The most famous courtesans who visited the church were Fiammetta, Julia Campana and Tullia d’Aragona.
💫Their seats were assigned in the front rows so that the public could only see their backs and not be distracted from thinking about God. It is believed that the remains of the priestesses of love are also kept here. One reason was that the Church’s Founding Fathers (e.g. St. Augustine and St. Paul) stated that for the benefit of social order, legalizing s€x working was better.
💫The facade of the building is lined with natural stone slabs of travertine, which originally decorated the #colosseum . The basilica contains many works of #art : the statue of Madonna with the Child, the famous fresco by Raphael –
💫the Prophet Isaiah, images of John the Theologian, as well as a painting of the Pilgrim’s Madonna by Caravaggio, the biggest Baroque master. The artist’s model was Maddalena Antognetti, a high-ranking courtesan, which is why the Mother of God’s image is too deep a neckline.
